Reference & Adult Services
Legal questions, medical questions, computer and Internet technology questions, genealogy questions, readers’ advisory: Reference and adult services have expanded greatly over the years from “Let me show you where that book is located” to “Let me show you how to download that book to your device.” If your typical day encompasses everything from “How do I locate my great-grandfather’s birth record?” to “Why won’t this document print?” then the Reference & Adult Services Interest group (RASI) warmly welcomes you. Every day in Maine, Reference Librarians search databases, request items between libraries, process passport applications, help jobseekers find information, point people in crisis to legal, medical or social assistance, and they do all this by delving into old archives, keeping up on the latest technological advances, and - most importantly - turning to and supporting each other.
Objective
The object of RASI is to promote and improve library services for adults
The interest group is for reference, reader’s advisory and adult services librarians or those who are interested in such services. The section's work is to provide a forum to discuss issues related to adult services e.g. public health or financial literacy workshops, readers advisories, genealogy reference, Internet access, etc; to provide a means of communication for members of the field; and to sponsor workshops and conference sessions on issues related to reference services and adult services and programs. Along with creating a group to allow experts to network, a vital goal is to connect experts with librarians responsible for reference or adult services but without prior training or experience.
Discussions, workshops, and other methods will be used to facilitate opportunities for collaboration
