The Buzz…

There was a healthy discussion today on MELIBS regarding the two November referenda of primary interest to libraries – TABOR II and excise tax reduction.  Generally there is great concern for further reductions in library funding at both the state and local levels.  Several librarians wrote that the library services would be on the chopping block if these measures passed.  A few months ago the South Berwick area paper had an article about the effects of the proposed cut in excise taxes.  The library was specifically mentioned as one of the services that the town would have to cut back on (or cut out althogether) should the measure pass.

Every librarian should endeavor to be as well informed about these two issues as possible.  To read the TABOR II proposal go to http://www.tabornow.com/uploads/pdf/tabor-legislation.pdf.  For the excise tax proposal go to http://www.mainelegislature.org/legis/bills/bills_124th/billpdfs/IB000101.pdf.
