She graduated with honors from the University of Maine at Augusta with a BA in English. Chickadee Award
The Chickadee Award - Maine Children's Choice Picture Book Project.
In the spring of 2004, a group of school and public librarians with assistance from local teachers and a literacy specialist in the mid-coast region began working together to create what is now known as "The Chickadee Award - Maine Children's Choice Picture Book Project. It was modeled after other successful children's choice picture book projects in other states and the Maine Student Book Award. Funding was granted by the Maine Humanities Council.
The committee chose 10 picture books published in 2003 to be on this year's list. It also created a curriculum guide of activities that includes a synopsis of each books, biographical sketches, a variety of activities, a voting form, lists of companion books and web sites. It also shows how the activities provide numerous opportunities to meet the requirements of the Maine Learning Results. A list of the picture books can be found at http://www.bathpublicschools.com/bathshare/Brown,%20Charlotte/. Select the name Charlotte Brown. For more information and/or to order a $5.00 curriculum guide please contact Nyree J. Thomas at: nthomas@patten.lib.me.us

Walter J. Taranko Library-Media Specialist of the Year
The Maine Association of School Libraries is proud to celebrate the work of Kathy Foss of Camden-Rockport Middle School, by awarding her the 2004 Walter J. Taranko Library-Media Specialist of the Year award. She was nominated for this honor by Jim Morse, a teacher at Camden-Rockport Middle School, and the nomination was enthusiastically supported by her many colleagues. When Kathy came to Camden Rockport Middle School, the library was in one classroom in the basement, its literature collection consisted of Reader's Digest Condensed Books, and it had seating for twelve students at two tables. From there, she has been the driving force behind weeding, reorganizing and expanding the entire collection, moving the library from a basement room to a central location on the first floor (and subsequently designing and planning a whole new library space provided in a building expansion), increasing the seating from twelve to over fifty, automating the collection, increasing the varied technologies available to her students, and most importantly, reaching out to the students and faculty to fully integrate information skills in the school?s curriculum and daily endeavors.

MLA Journalism Award
The MLA Communications Committee is looking for nominations for the 2005 Maine Library Journalism Award! The winning entry is selected on the basis of originality, timeliness, and relevance to Maine libraries. Entries which address Maine libraries and the Children's Internet Protection Act, successful new library programs, the Patriot Act, honors bestowed on libraries or librarians, or the Palesky initiative are only a few examples. Surely there are many great candidates out there. Nominations can be in print, audiovisual, or electronic format, and can be second-party or self-nominated. For more information can be found at http://mainelibraries.org/awards/journal/index.htm. Thank you for your help in recognizing our media colleagues who have supported our libraries.

Maine Libraries Week - January 9 – 15, 2005
Librarians are encouraged to celebrate Maine Libraries Week, January 9 – 15, 2005, at their local libraries. Some ideas: 1) an open house for staff, trustees, legislators, or the public; 2) an article for the local newspaper or house organ; 3) a display inside or outside the library. Think about an audience you want to reach and a message you want to send about YOUR library. This is an opportunity to promote the MARVEL! databases or local library programs to a new audience.
The first Maine Libraries Week was declared in January 2004 at the State Capitol by Maine Governor John Baldacci and First Lady Karen Baldacci. A special press conference was held in the Hall of Flags featuring State Senator (and Freeport Community Library children’s librarian) Beth Edmonds and State Librarian J. Gary Nichols.
2005 Hall of Flags Celebration Thursday January 13, 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Maine legislators, librarians, trustees, Friends, and the public are invited to attend the 2005 Maine Libraries Week Celebration to be held at the Hall of Flags in the State Capitol in Augusta on Thursday, January 13, 2005 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. The Maine State Library and the three Regional Library Districts in cooperation with the three Regional Library District Public Relations Committees, the Maine Library Association’s Communications Committee, and the Maine Association of School Libraries are planning the celebration to promote and publicize Maine libraries. Registration is not required. This year’s event will focus on the following Maine library awards:
Maine Library Association - “Journalism Award” [Bangor Daily News], “Outstanding Librarian of the Year” [State Librarian J. Gary Nichols]
Youth Services Section’s Lupine & Katahdin children’s book awards
Maine Regional Library System’s Library Excellence Awards - [Patten Free Library, Bath & Camden Public Library]
Maine Association of School Libraries - “Administrator of the Year” [Cony High School Principal], “Media Specialist of the Year” [Kathy Foss, Camden]
A press conference will be held to honor recipients of the awards. Exhibits and handouts about the awards will be set up in the Hall of Flags. The Maine State Library MARVEL! databases will be promoted by a specially-costumed staff member and a new MARVEL! exhibit. Refreshments will be served.

Library Programs & News

McArthur Public Library, Biddeford
The trustees of the McArthur Library have named Vicky Smith as the new Library Director, effective immediately. Before serving as Acting Director for the past three weeks since Bob Filgate's retirement, Vicky has been Assistant Director, as well as Children's Librarian here since 1995. You probably know Vicky from her participation in many state and national library forums, including the SMLD Executive Board, Maine SCOOP, Cream of the Crop, and committees for the Newbery Award, the Boston Globe/Hornbook Award, and the Notable Children's Books List.

Richard Sibley and his wife Janet Sibley, will retire this December after more than two decades of working at the Waterville Public Library and the Kennebec Valley Community College Library, respectively. They will move to Arizona, where their children reside. Dick had fun in Waterville and says of the Maine library community that librarians tend to be supportive and to favor win-win solutions, and working with them has almost always been fun and has never been trying.
The Maine library community and the Waterville Public Library are fortunate to have Sarah Sugden to replace him. Sarah worked at the Waterville Library from 1989 to 1992 while she attended Waterville High School. She graduated from Dartmouth College and got her MLS at Simmons. Sarah is 30 years old, married to Matthew Hankey, and has a son named Jack. Sarah has held two positions in the Children's and YA Departments in the Phoenix Public Library system, has worked as a school librarian in North Carolina, and will soon leave her job as head of Children's Services at the Cambridge Public Library in Massachusetts. Dick says that Sarah is very intelligent and energetic. She played varsity soccer while in high school, and intramural rugby while at Dartmouth.
