CALENDAR OF EVENTS 2001

EDUCATION/TRAINING/WORKSHOPS
THREE DAY SYMPOSIUM ON CHILDREN'S LITERATURE. The Center for the Study of Children's Literature at Simmons College in
Boston is presenting a 3-week symposium and a 3-day institute this summer called "Brave New Worlds." An excerpt from the brochure: "What will tomorrow's children's literature look like? How will it be created and produced? Whose stories will it tell? Will it tell stories at all? Who will have access to it and what forms will this access take? What will bring readers to their literature and what kinds of experiences will they seek? How will children's literature and YA literature reflect the worlds in which we live? How will they change our world? Will publishers and critics work to maintain the familiar or will they challenge boundaries and foster new visions? At a time when technology shifts the parameters of possibility in literature for children and young adults, of the picturebook and young adult literature, of realism as well as of fantasy, poetry, informational books, and even folkloric retellings, "Brave New Worlds" invites participants to consider new frontiers of expression." More information is available at the following Web site: http://www.simmons.edu/programs/depts/child/bnw/index.html. (The list of speakers is top-notch: Natalie Babbitt, E.L. Konigsburg, Daniel Handler and Richard Peck, among others.)

HERE'S AN F.Y.I.

E-RATE APPLICANTS CHANGING SERVICE PROVIDERS. In February, the FCC overturned an earlier administrative decision that limited an E-Rate applicant from changing services providers. The FCC had allowed changes in service providers whenever the applicant certifies that the service provider change is allowed under its state and local procurement rules and under the terms of the contract between the applicant and its original service provider, and the applicant has notified its original service provider of its intent to change service providers. But, the FCC found that a broader and more lenient approach were consistent with its goal of affording schools and libraries maximum flexibility to choose the offering that meets their needs most effectively and efficiently. This week, the Schools and Libraries Division (SLD/USAC) posted its list of new criteria for service substitutions, i.e., telecom products and/or services different from those specified in the Form 471 application. See: http://www.sl.universalservice.org/reference/ServiceSub.asp/ For a copy of the FCC ruling, see:

LEGISLATIVE UPDATES. This is a list of the bills we have been following this session and their status at this time. LD 1556 has been recalled for an amendment--we have not heard what the amendment is, or who is offering it.
IN CELEBRATION OF AUDREY CONANT. Ralph Conant and Audrey's Maine friends are planning a get-together at the Conant Farm to celebrate her remarkable life. We would love to have all her friends and colleagues come to this lovely spot to share our fond memories of Audrey on Sunday, June 2 at 11 AM. Farm directions: Exit 33 from I 95; Right onto Route 137 East. Stay on 137 across new bridge (not business 137 through town); about four mile toward China on right is Maple Ridge Road (1 mile past S. Pond Rd.); right onto Maple Ridge; half mile on right is Conant Farm with 2200 on a white mail box. When I have a map to the farm, I'll post that on the MASL web pages and let you know when it's there. We look forward to see you!

ROGER BLADWIN AWARD WINNER. On April 11, 2001 the Executive Board of the Maine Civil Liberties Union voted to award this year's Roger Baldwin Award to the Maine Library Association. When she called to notify me of their choice, Doris Gilpatrick informed me that the Baldwin Award (named for one of the founders of the ACLU) is given "to honor a person or organization that has made a significant contribution to civil liberties in Maine". The award will be formally presented at a celebratory event on Thursday, Oct. 18 (or, Oct. 25th) 2001.

ELIZABETH DERECTOR, ARTIST OF THE MONTH AT MEMORIAL LIBRARY. Silkscreen artist and owner/designer of Spiritwear clothing, Elizabeth Derecktor is April's Artist of the Month at the Memorial Library in Boothbay Harbor. Lizzy has been painting fabric and designing her unique collection of silk wear since 1986. She graduated from Brown University with a Fine Art Degree and her love of textiles was inspired while attending California College of Arts & Crafts. Lizzy is also a member of Inana, Sisters in Rhythm a popular all-women drumming ensemble from the midcoast region. Inana performs and teaches through-out Maine and they just released their latest CD. Her passion for rhythm and dance finds its way into her clothing, which are spiritual in nature and resplendent with colors and themes from the natural world.

In addition to her ethereal clothing designs, Lizzy also works on pieces that are meant to be hung and enjoyed visually. Currently on display at the library is a diverse collection of work that spark the imagination and spirit with their elements of color, design and subject. "White Buffalo Spirit," "Bear Spirit," and "Dancing Prayers" are just a few of the themes on display. Make the library a must-stop-by place on your to-do list this month. Except for one collaborative work with her husband, all the work at the library is available for purchase. If you want to see more (and you will) Lizzy and her husband own and operate the Iron and Silk Gallery on Rt. 27 in Edgecomb and her clothing can be seen at Calypso on Commercial St. in Boothbay Harbor.
