Obituary for Walt Taranko from the Kennebec Journal.
READFIELD - Walter John Taranko, 57, died peacefully at his home in Readfield, Tuesday, June 26, 2001, surrounded by family and loved ones.
Walter was born in Slonim, Poland, July 20, 1943, the son of Ivan Nicholas Taranko and Eugenia (Parenago) Taranko. He grew up in Laupheim, Germany; North Vernon, Ind.; Springfield, Mass.; and Richmond, Maine. He graduated from Richmond High School in 1962, Gorham State Teachers College in 1966 and Indiana University in 1969 and 1971.
Walter married Donna Elaine Peverly, July 20, 1969, celebrating more than 31 very happy years together.
Walter served in the Army First Air Cavalry Division from 1966-1968, which included a tour of duty in Vietnam. He was awarded a Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his service.
In 1971, he directed Project Lodestone in Calais, an audiovisual center for Washington County. In 1975, he joined the Department of Education as a media and school libraries consultant for the State Library. During his time at the Department of Education, he was named Media Specialist of the Year in 1982, and was instrumental in starting a distance-education program for the master's in library science degree. He was also an instructor at the University of Maine at Machias, and a professor at University of Maine at Augusta. In honor of his professional accomplishments, the Maine Library Association instituted the Walter J. Taranko Media Specialist of the Year Award in 2000. He was a co-initiator of the Holocaust Human Rights Center of Maine, and very active in MEMA and MLA organizations. He was a trustee at the Readfield United Methodist Church, and also served on various committees. He coached numerous softball, baseball, basketball and soccer teams, and was a certified official for track and field.
Walter is remembered for his love of family, devotion to libraries and learning, and his warm heart and open hand extended to anyone who needed him.

At radio station WERU's Full Circle Summer Fair at the Union Fairgrounds on Sunday, July 8th (10:00-6:00) there will be a used book sale to benefit the radio station. July 11 - Gramma Kilburn's Kitchen with Jane Philbrick. Local author Jane Philbrick's memoir and cookbook, Gramma Kilburn's Kitchen, recalls the seasonal rhythms of a Vermont farm in the first half of the 20th century. Ms. Philbrick will give a brief history of "The Farm" and lead us through a year of cooking, canning, maple sugainr and more. The program will be followed by a book signing and light refreshments.

Book Repair Workshop
The Central Maine Library District and Southern Maine Library District are sponsoring two 2-part book repair workshops this summer. The instructor is Abraham Schechter, author of Basic Book Repair Methods, published by Libraries Unlimited.
The first two-part workshop will be held at Gray Public Library on July 13 and 20; the second two-part workshop will be in Dresden at the Bridge Academy Public Library on July 27 and August 3. The sessions run from 9:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Registration fee is $35, plus a $30 lab fee for a kit of book repair supplies to keep [lab fee is optional if you bring your own supplies, as listed in the flyer]. Enrollment will be limited; early registration is advised.

The high school of approx. 375 students is located about 17.5 miles west of Bangor on Rt. 15. The high school library has approximately 4,000 volumes, 16 student use computers and 30 magazine subscriptions. This is a full time postion (180 days) supporting both library and adjoining computer lab.
