Windham Public Library Wins Third Place in National FOLUSA-Wiley Science Contest. Friends of Libraries U.S.A and publisher John Wiley & Sons, Inc. sponsored a national contest honoring science author Janice VanCleave. The purpose of the contest was to help kids 7-12 get excited about science. The Summer Reading Program "Experiment...With Reading!" concluded just as the contest was announced last August. Laurel Parker, Children's Librarian, put together the required information and entered the competition. On January 8, 2001 Athena Michaels , Marketing Representative from Wiley, called the library to to announce that Windham had won third place. The prize was a collection of Janice VanCleave books, a copy of Janice VanCleave's Science Shack Video, and an invitation to attend the FOLUSA Annual Author Breakfast at the American Library Association Mid-Winter Meeting in Washington, D.C. on January 15. Mrs. Parker, who was unable to attend, worked with Inese Gruber, Library Director, to make last minute arrangements to participate in the event this past weekend. The Mid-Winter Meeting of ALA is used to conduct committee business and announce awards for many library groups. A huge exhibit hall offered displays by publishers, equipment suppliers, automation firms, and library service companies. A great collection of posters for children's books gathered from the exhibits is now hanging in the Children's Room at Windham Public Library. Highlights of the trip included lunch with author Janice VanCleave and the annual Author Breakfast where Carrie Brown (The Hatbox Baby), Frank Rich (Ghost Light: A Memoir), Debra Dickerson (An American Story), and Dennis Lehane (Mystic River) were the featured speakers. The winners of the FOLUSA-Wiley Science Contest were announced at the well attended breakfast. The Friends of the Windham Public Library have been strong supporters of the Windham Public Library since it opened its doors at 217 Windham Center Road in December, 1971. They have also been members of the Friends of Maine Libraries and Friends of Libraries U.S.A. for many years. Thanks to the affiliation with the larger organizations the Friends have received a FOML grant for books and this most recent
recognition from FOLUSA. For further information contact: Laurel T. Parker 892-1908, Windham Public Library, 217 Windham Center Rd., Windham, Maine 04062

The Library Access Project

Each library receives - at absolutely no cost to them - five audio recordings of plays performed by some of this country's most prominent and talented actors. Each tape is packaged in durable, library-ready vinyl cases with colorful, attractive covers. To assist with publicizing the availability of these tapes, we will provide publicity materials including a sample press release and signage. We ask that the participating libraries provide us with feedback on how the tapes were received and used by their constituency, and some basic statistical information about their institution.

Our current funding allows for the distribution of five tapes to 500 libraries. We continue to seek additional funding that will allow us to distribute more titles to each of the libraries that participate in this project. The selected titles for the initial distribution are:
