New Maine Memo editor
It's been wonderful working as the editor for the Maine Memo this year. Starting with the October 2000 issue, the editor will again be Anastasia Weigle, Director of the Warren Memorial Library in Westbrook (aweigle@warren.lib.me.us, Anastasia S. Weigle, 10 Longwood Avenue, Old Orchard Beach, ME 04064). Thank you to everyone who sent me news for the Memo this year. -- Betsey Noble

MeLibs-L Archives - A Nice Thing
As mentioned earlier in the summer on MeLibs-L, our library list has a web interface now: http://lists.maine.edu/archives/melibs-l.html. This is very useful for anyone who wants to keep up with the conversations while traveling, finds access to the Internet someplace, but doesn't have access to e-mail. Before you leave for the road, visit the web site for MeLibs-L and set a password for yourself. If you choose either the "Post to the list" or click a month to read back items, you follow the link to set a password for the first time, enter the e-mail address you use to subscribe to the list, choose a password, and then wait a minute for the automated system to send an e-mail to that address and complete the confirmation procedure.

SMLD New Web Site
Check out the Southern Maine Library District's new web site http://www.state.me.us/msl/smld/index.htm We are looking for suggestions and feedback. Special thanks to Webmaster Joyce Wheeler, Scarborough High School Librarian.

SMLD Mobile Tech Lab
The SMLD Mobile Technology Lab, funded by a New Century grant, has gotten off to an excellent start. The first training sessions were held at the Kennebunk Free Library in July and the Dyer Library in Saco during August. Participants used laptops connected to the Internet to learn about computers and Internet searching. Project Director Janet Harmon has set up a web site with the schedule, lab equipment, and background information at http://www.state.me.us/msl/smld/index.htm.

Awards from Public Library Association
THE HIGHSMITH LIBRARY INNOVATION AWARD recognizes a public library's innovative and creative service program to the community. (As part of the evaluation process with the vendor, after three years the emphasis may change to reflect new trends and needs.) A plaque and a $2,000 honorarium are presented annually at the ALA Annual Conference. Established in 1996. Sponsored by Highsmith Inc. Application Deadline is November 1, 2000. Read about this award and others from PLA at http://www.pla.org/awards/index.html.
