EDUCATION/TRAINING/WORKSHOPS
GET TO THE POINT : AN INTRODUCTION TO CATALOGING
Get To The Point is a six week course which includes homework assignments and a project. Each student receives a syllabus of over 150 pages. Sessions will be offered at:

The Maine Regional Library System in cooperation with the Maine Library Association will award 2.0 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) upon completion of this course. COST: $140 if postmarked no later than September 1, 2000. $150 if postmarked later than September 1, 2000.
INSTRUCTOR: Bonnie Collins, library consultant and collection manager, will present Get To
The Point. With experience in all aspects of cataloging, she is well qualified to help you learn how to make your collections more assessable. She was the Director of Technical Services at the Maine State Library for over 26 years. Bonnie has been conducting workshops and teaching classes in collection management for librarians throughout Maine.

It's been wonderful working as the editor for the Maine Memo this year. MeLibs-L Archives - A Nice Thing
As mentioned earlier in the summer on MeLibs-L, our library list has a web interface now: http://lists.maine.edu/archives/melibs-l.html. This is very useful for anyone who wants to keep up with the conversations while traveling, finds access to the Internet someplace, but doesn't have access to e-mail. Before you leave for the road, visit the web site for MeLibs-L and set a password for yourself. If you choose either the "Post to the list" or click a month to read back items, you follow the link to set a password for the first time, enter the e-mail address you use to subscribe to the list, choose a password, and then wait a minute for the automated system to send an e-mail to that address and complete the confirmation procedure.

SMLD Mobile Tech Lab
The SMLD Mobile Technology Lab, funded by a New Century grant, has gotten off to an excellent start. The first training sessions were held at the Kennebunk Free Library in July and the Dyer Library in Saco during August. Participants used laptops connected to the Internet to learn about
computers and Internet searching. Project Director Janet Harmon has set up a web site with the schedule, lab equipment, and background information at
http://www.state.me.us/msl/smld/index.htm.

THE HIGHSMITH LIBRARY INNOVATION AWARD recognizes a public library's innovative and creative service program to the community. (As part of the evaluation process with the vendor, after three years the emphasis may change to reflect new trends and needs.) A plaque and a $2,000 honorarium are presented annually at the ALA Annual Conference. Established in 1996. Sponsored by Highsmith Inc. Application Deadline is November 1, 2000. - Kittery - Childrens Services Librarian. The popular Children Services at the Rice Public Library require an experienced Children Services Librarian. This person working with other library staff, is responsible for maintaining and evaluating the children's collection, and for conducting programs that children and their parents to use these materials for pleasure and information. A Masters of Library Science is preferred. A bachelor's degree and courses in library procedures and children's literature are required. Also the candidate should have knowledge in using computers through courses and experience, and experience in working with children, especially in a library setting. Above all this person should be able to work with other library staff and patrons of all ages. Full-time, includes some Saturdays and some Thursday evenings. - Blue Hill - Circulation Librarian. The Blue Hill Public Library invites applications for the position of Circulation Librarian in a growing library. Responsibilities include working at the circulation desk, shelving, monitoring correct shelving by staff and volunteers, some material processing, and assisting borrowers in the use of the library. The successful candidate will
have a service and team-oriented approach, excellent communication and interpersonal skills. A college degree or liberal arts background at the college level and/or a minimum of two years of library experience or equivalent combination, keyboarding skills, and ability to learn

- Brunswick - Video Assistant. The position of Video Assistant (Ed. Tech. II level - requires 60 college credits) is currently open at Brunswick High School Library. The position
is full-time (40 hours per week), 186 days per year, $10.20/hour for the first six months, then $11.08 per hour. Benefits include health insurance, six paid holidays, and reimbursement for two approved inservice training courses and one college level course per year. Responsibilities include: supervising and working with students to produce and broadcast daily morning announcements; supervising and working with students and teachers to identify and produce video clips of Brunswick School Department class projects, activities, and other events for broadcast on local public access cable channels; training students and teachers in the use of video recording, production, and editing equipment; and collaborating with teachers and students on the development of curricular and cocurricular video production projects. - Rumford - Reference Librarian. The Rumford Public Library is accepting applications for the full-time position of Reference Librarian. Starting salary is $22,731 or higher depending on qualifications. This position requires a confident person with strong computer skills, interpersonal skills, and broad knowledge base. Full benefits as an employee of the Town of Rumford including paid vacation, sick leave, etc. This is a 35 hour-per-week job with the option to work a four or five day workweek. - Sanford - Library Assistant. The Louis B. Goodall Memorial Library in Sanford, Maine is seeking an experienced Library Assistant to work serving the public in its Children's
Room assisting the Head of Children's Services, Staff the Library's Reference Desk on a limited basis, and also Staff the Circulation Desk as needed. This is a 40 hours per week position, working flexible hours including some evenings and Saturdays. The primary focus of this position
is to Staff the Children's Area, however, the successful candidate must be qualified to serve as a Reference Librarian. This position requires a mature, dependable person possessing library
skills, strong customer service ability and a willingness to work under the direction of the Head of Children's Services. The Library seeks a candidate who is able to work both independently and as part of a team, to help make our Children's Room a great resource for Sanford-Springvale's young people and their parents. This position also requires an individual with the skills necessary to provide service to the public in the Library's Reference area, and at the Circulation Desk. In addition to general library skills, candidates should possess experience assisting children and parents, as well as possess the ability to instruct children. Candidates must be computer literate with experience with the Windows 95/98/2000 environment, word processing and Internet use.
Candidates should have knowledge of the use of Library Automated Systems or the computer savvy to learn quickly.
