Cairns Distiguished HSLIC Librarian Award for 2000
At the annual meeting of the Health Science Librarians and Information Consortium (HSLIC) on April 28, Barbara Harness, Librarian at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta, was presented with the Cairns Distiguished HSLIC Librarian Award for 2000. Barbara was recognised for her service to the organization and to the field of librarianship. She has been a leader within HSLIC and has represented both the interests of libraries in general and health sciences libraries in particular, notably at hearings of the PUC and at meetings of the Maine Hospital Association. Attendees at the recent Maine Libraries Conference may have enjoyed the informative display on
health information resources which Barbara presented. Barbara is indeed one of HSLIC's leading lights.
Summer Reading Program Coupons
Old Fort Western and the Charles M. Bailey Library, Winthrop, have developed a coupon incentive
program that the Fort would like to extend to all Maine libraries.
Librarians who are interested in offering the coupons as part of their summer reading program may contact the Fort, who will send you a sheet of coupons that you may photocopy, initial in colored ink, and give out. The coupons are for each child registered in a summer reading program and who has logged his or her first book read. It is good for one free child admission to the Fort when accompanied by a paying adult.
For coupons or questions, contact:
Jay Adams, Old Fort Western, 16 Cony Street, Augusta, 04330. E-mail: oldfort@oldfortwestern.org. Telephone 626-2385.
The Scoop on SCOOP
The SCOOP Committee is pleased to announce the vendors listed below met SCOOP specifications and will be listed in the SCOOP Vendor Discount Catalog. The Catalog will be mailed to all members of the Maine Regional Library System [MRLS] prior to the start of the new contract July 1, 2000. The contract may be renewed with these vendors for two additional
years through 2003.
Please note that SCOOP now incorporates what was formerly known as SCOOP [statewide cooperative] and MELD [Maine Library Discounts]. SCOOP now includes not only book and AV wholesalers, but also furniture and equipment vendors.
Following are the vendors to be listed in the Catalog: Audio Editions; Baker & Taylor; BWI - Book Wholesalers Inc.; Bradco Chair Company; Brodart [books] ; Brodart [supplies and furnishings]; Chivers North America, Inc.; Davidson's Titles, Inc.; Demco, Inc.; Gaylord; Highsmith, Inc.; Ingram Library Services, Inc.; The Library Store; Perma-Bound; Sagebrush/Econoclad Books; Tucker Library Interiors; Vernon Library Supplies; and Whitcomb Associates.
The Catalog is being mailed free to all public, school, academic, and special members of the Maine Regional Library system. Only MRLS members are eligible for SCOOP discounts. Please retain your Catalog and feel free to make copies. Additional copies may be obtained for a fee.
The Catalog contains detailed information for each vendor including discount schedules, how to open a new account, customer service and contact information, bid reference numbers, exclusions, and shipping information. Please read carefully -- failure to follow instructions may results in a library's not receiving the SCOOP discount. -- Shirley Helfrich, Southern Maine Library District, 5 Monument Square, Portland, ME 04101, 207-871-1766.
