Book Budget Request The Maine State Library has a bill before the Appropriations Committee this session to increase the book budget by $200,000.
It is scheduled to be heard on Wednesday, February 9, 2000.
Maine Info Net Forum New on the Maine Info Net Home Page: Documents, discussions and news about the project within a web forums environment. Newbery and Caldecott Winners Christopher Paul Curtis, author of "Bud, Not Buddy," and Simms Taback, illustrator and author of "Joseph Had a Little Overcoat" are the 2000 winners of the John Newbery and Randolph Caldecott Medals, the most prestigious awards in children's literature. Library of Congress Web Site Hacked A computer hack of the Library of Congress’s Thomas site caused a defaced version of the site to be publicly available for some one-and-a-half hours January 17. .. The hacked Thomas page was the only damage identified, and the site has since been restored. LC is now reviewing its network and computer security procedures. How often when you attend a library meeting do you ask everyone else, "What are you doing in your library?" Hearing about planned programs and events is a way of keeping in touch and getting ideas for programs of your own. The World Wide Web and this newsletter allow librarians from Kittery to Caribou, from Bethel to Lubec share their pride in the programs they are presenting in their libraries.

- February 7 - Monday. Enjoying Chamber Music… with Anthony Antolini and Bay Chamber Concerts. The series continues for people who may not attend chamber music concerts but have an open mind about them. 7 p.m. in The Jean Picker Room.
- February 8 - Tuesday. The Lighthouses of Maine… a presentation and discussion. In collaboration with the Camden Historical Society, Ted Panayotoff presents a wide and historical view of the lighthouses of Maine. Particular discussion will focus on the Curtis Island Lighthouse. 6:30 p.m. in The Jean Picker Room.

CADENCES American Poetry at the Burbank Branch presents award winning poet and the Dana Professor of Poetry at Colby College, Ira Sadoff. 7:00 p.m. @ Burbank Branch of the Portland Public Library, 377 Stevens Avenue, Portland (across from Deering High School). FREE and open to the public with no advance reservations required.
Winthrop - Charles M. Bailey Public Library
- February 1 - Tuesday. Margy Burns Knight, author of the acclaimed books Welcoming Babies and Talking Walls, will give a talk on her new book at 12:30 p.m. The program is free of charge and open to the public.
- February 16 - Wednesday. The Writers' Group continues to meet the third Wednesday of each month. Elizabeth Bailey Roberts and other area writers of all levels will gather
in the library's historic Reading Room at 10 a.m.
- February 19 - Saturday. Spend a fun and relaxing Saturday evening at the Library with talented local guitarist/songster Larry McKimmy 7:30 p.m. This program is set for every third Saturday. Larry's repertoire includes folk, blues, and many old favorites. Refreshments will be served.
- February 26 - Saturday. The Books & Tea Discussion Series continues with The Warden by Trollope, 2 p.m. Refreshments and complimentary copies of the book are provided; participants are requested to register.
