MAINE STATE LIBRARY NEWS

Book Budget Request The Maine State Library has a bill before the Appropriations Committee this session to increase the book budget by $200,000. It is scheduled to be heard on Wednesday, February 9, 2000.

Maine Info Net Forum New on the Maine Info Net Home Page: Documents, discussions and news about the project within a web forums environment. Newbery and Caldecott Winners Christopher Paul Curtis, author of "Bud, Not Buddy," and Simms Taback, illustrator and author of "Joseph Had a Little Overcoat" are the 2000 winners of the John Newbery and Randolph Caldecott Medals, the most prestigious awards in children's literature. PLA Keynote Speakers during the upcoming Public Library Association (PLA) National Conference, "PLA 2000," March 28-April 1, 2000, in Charlotte, NC include: Orson Scott Card, author of the Ender's series; Michael Gelb, author of How to Think Like Leonardo da Vinci - Seven Steps to Everyday Genius; cowboy humorist Baxter Black; authors Paula Danziger, Lisa Scottoline, and Dori Sanders; and Bailey White, National Public Radio commentator and writer. Popular Intellectual Freedom Publication Updated The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), has updated the intellectual freedom publication, Intellectual Freedom for Children: The Censor is Coming. Library of Congress Web Site Hacked A computer hack of the Library of Congress’s Thomas site caused a defaced version of the site to be publicly available for some one-and-a-half hours January 17. .. The hacked Thomas page was the only damage identified, and the site has since been restored. LC is now reviewing its network and computer security procedures.
