EDUCATION/TRAINING/WORKSHOP

June 28 - July 5 - Millennium Teachers' Institute in Montreal and Ottawa. Prepare to teach more knowledgeably about Canada by participating. CEUs are awarded and graduate credit may be arranged. The Canadian-American Center of the University of Maine in combination with the Canadian studies centers of the Universities of Vermont and SUNY/Plattsburgh will co-lead this Institute, and all three are veterans at creating and leading relevant and practical teachers' institutes.

The Institute will begin and end in Montreal with three days in Ottawa including Canada Day, the July first celebration of Canada's national holiday. For eight days and seven nights, sixteen teachers, librarians, and other K-12 educators will tour Montreal and Ottawa investigating selected themes and issues in Canadian culture and contemporary life. Participants will attend lectures and walking tours and visit cultural sites, as well as have time to research and relate Canadian information to school curriculum.

The cost of the Institute will be about $550, due to generous underwriting. It will include round-trip van transportation from Orono to Montreal and Ottawa, double-occupancy hotel accommodations at Hotel de l'Institut in Montreal and Marriott Residence Inn in Ottawa, admission to cultural sites, and fees for lectures; participants pay for transportation to and from Orono, and pay for most meals. Applications and brochures outlining the itinerary will be mailed in January, and any U.S. K-12 educator is invited to apply. Selection of participants will be in April.
