DECEMBER'S CALENDAR OF EVENTS

ALA NEWS: American Library Association Invites Applications for New Traveling Exhibitions. The ALA, in collaboration with The Huntington Library, San Marino, CA, and The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), invites libraries to apply for the tour of a traveling exhibition called "The Great Experiment: George Washington and the American Republic." The exhibition is based on a major exhibition of original manuscripts, rare books, prints, engravings, and artifacts from the collections of the Huntington and Pierpont Morgan Libraries, the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History and other institutions, which was displayed at the Huntington Library in 1998-99 and at the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York in Fall 1999. NEH has provided major funding for the library traveling exhibit. "The Great Experiment" will encourage visitors to understand the George Washington behind the myths--myths that were created to strengthen his position as President and to secure the stability of a struggling republic. This biographical exhibition traces the development of a man who was born a loyal British subject and became the leader of a revolution; a victorious military leader who gave up the trappings of power to return to farming; a reluctant statesman who forged the institutions of a popular government that have endured for two centuries, and to whom John Adams, James Madison and Thomas Jefferson looked for guidance. Deadline for grants is January 10, 2000. Please call 1-800-545-2433, ext. 5045 or e-mail Susan Brandehoff, Project Mgr. at sbrandeh@ala.org for more information.

"Go Figure" is a collaboration of the Minnesota Children's Museum and the ALA, and is funded by the National Science Foundation, Cargill and 3M. This exhibition includes an interactive exhibition as well as interpretive and educational materials that bring the exciting world of math and its everyday uses to children two to seven years old and their parents through children's literature. Deadline for grants is December 17, 1999. Please call 1-800-545-2433, ext. 5045 or e-mail Susan Brandehoff, Project Mgr. at sbrandeh@ala.org for more information.

CHILDREN'S AUTHORS AND ILLUSTRATORS WEBSITE. Have you taken a look at the Children's Authors and Illustrators database that has been mounted on the MASL website? Check it out: <http://www.maslibraries.org/authill/authill.html>. MASL would appreciate additions to the list now that it's up and easy to add to. Have you have a children's or YA author or illustrator visit your library or school? Did you have a good experience? If so, please take 5 minutes (really, that's all it takes) to feel out MASL's user-friendly form! Sharing information will help us all.

STATE PARTNERSHIP GRANT PROGRAM. Maine's application for a State Partnership Grant Program has been approved! THE PHYSICAL IMPLEMENTATION DATE FOR MAINE IS AUGUST 2001. Part of the announcement letter states that Gates will be working with the State Library to finalize the list of public libraries in Maine approximately seven months before implementation. Five months before implementation Gates will hold Grant workshops in the State to explain the grant process and hand out applications. "Before Your Computer Arrives" workshops will then be scheduled for Maine. These dates may appear to be in the distant future.

THE CHILDREN'S THEATRE OF MAINE. This winter The Children's Theatre of Maine is holding its 9th Annual Young Playwrights Contest. Children ages 18 years old or younger are eligible to enter. The play can be of any length, about any topic appropriate for all ages, and must be original (no adaptations). Plays can be written as collaborations as long as the collaborators are all under 19. The Children's Theatre of Maine=92s Young Playwrights Ensemble will produce the winning entries in March 2000! In 1998, The Children's Theatre of Maine received a total of 134 plays from kids across Maine. The 5 winning plays were written by 8 playwrights. They ranged from a sweet story about a little bunny=92s birthday in Bun Bun=92s Birthday, to the thoughtful story of teens who reach out to help a friend in Saving Sam: A Story of Child Abuse. Teachers and parents have used this contest as an educational opportunity for their students in past years. We hope to continue that trend. Encourage your budding playwright to start writing now! The contest deadline is January 15th. Feel free to call CTM (207-878-2774) with questions about the contest. Typewritten plays can be submitted to: The Children's Theatre of Maine, PO Box 1011, Portland ME 04104.
